I think that compared with preparing to ride my bicycle around the world, actually doing it will be easy. I've spent the last year getting rid of possessions, and surprisingly, it's been a real hassle. My car, all my books, most of my furniture and as of this weekend, one ton of yard waste are now gone.
Yup, that's ONE TON.
I have a lot of trees on my property and they shed branches, leaves and needles endlessly. By the end of winter, the yard looks like...well I don't know what it looks like, but it ain't pretty.
So this past weekend I rented a truck and my daughter, Brittney, and her husband, Marty, graciously offered to help. It was back breaking labor raking up and hauling off all that stuff. In 10 hours we made 4 trips to the Goodwill and 5 trips to the landfill transfer station. I now know the lady at the transfer station booth way too well.
But now the yard is empty, or nearly so. The house is pretty hollow, too, which is a good thing because in just 78 days, I become the Highway Child.
