I’m not a coffee drinker but I like a hot beverage when I crawl out of my tent in the morning. Usually, I’ll bring along tea bags and mix up a brew with brown sugar. I really prefer hot cocoa but I can’t stand those grainy dry mixes you get in the supermarket. I’ve tried every brand and they all taste pretty bad.
My daughter, Maren, got me some Starbucks hot cocoa mix for Christmas so I decided to give it a try. They come in individual packets just like those other brands and mix up the same way. But that’s where the similarity ends.
No matter how you feel about the ubiquitous Starbucks brand, I think you’ll agree that they make pretty good stuff, and this hot cocoa mix is no exception.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s not as good as the real thing you make with chocolate syrup and steamed milk, but it’s not bad. Where other mix-with-hot-water brands taste thin, grainy and watery, the Starbucks version is smooth has some body to it. There’s also a little hint of bittersweet cocoa that the other hot mixes I’ve tried lack.
I’m not going to leave my tea bags at home on my around-the-world-trip, but I guess I’ll have to make room in my panniers for some Starbucks hot cocoa mix, too.
